Liverpool Adult Services
Liverpool Adult Services is a Supported Living Service providing community care and support to people with a learning disability. At present we are supporting 44 individuals to develop skills in order to become as independent as possible. We have a number of flats and houses which offer accessible supported accommodation for individuals who have a learning disability. Individuals are supported to sustain their own tenancy and, if they choose, to access all the opportunities and facilities that living in Liverpool, the European Capital of Culture in 2008, can offer them.
Our service enables people who have a learning disability to learn new skills, be included in the community, make choices, experience new activities, become more independent and increase confidence and self esteem.
The service works to the four key principles as set out in the government white paper, "Valuing People". These are:
- Legal and Civil Rights
- Independence
- Choice
- Inclusion
Each individual has the opportunity to reach their potential through Person Centred Planning and active support. They are supported by a highly trained staff team. The service has achieved 3 star excellent service status with CQC and recently was successful in reviewing the Investors in People Award.
We work in partnership with statutory agencies, Primary Care Trusts and John Moores University. We have an Access Centre which offers a range of activities, including:
- Information Technology
- Health and Safety
- Life Skills
- Arts and Crafts
- Voluntary opportunities
Individuals are supported and encouraged to take up new activities which may enhance their life style. Needs are assessed using person centred approaches. Clients of Liverpool Adult Services are supported to meet the following outcomes:
- Enjoy and Achieve
- Make a Positive Contribution
- Stay Safe
- Be Healthy
- Achieve Economic Wellbeing
We actively promote the Heroes Challenge which is a set of challenges ranging from catching a ball to using a computer, to contributing to own review. These are assessed and certificated.
Individuals are encouraged to take part in all appropriate aspects of planning the ongoing development of the Liverpool Adult Services and are actively involved in the following groups/committees:
- Quality Assurance
- Policy Making and Review
- Tenants Group
- Health and Safety
- Complaints
- Experts by Experience
We have the benefit of allotments which allow client to grow their own fruit and vegetables. We also have a Frances Taylor Foundation Liverpool Adult Service Choir, "Musical Belles" of which everybody is welcome to join. At the moment we have about a dozen clients who meet every Wednesday evening. We were also lucky enough to secure the talents of a professional singing coach and this year sang at two public events.
Nugent House, part of our central base, also has an Information Technology communication room and offers weekly learning sessions for clients to be able to develop their skills whilst their individual needs are still met.
Other activities that have been accessed and delivered at the Access Centre have been: chair based exercises, literacy and numeracy, keep fit to Salsa rhythm, food taster sessions, health and wellbeing courses and guest speakers which has included: Mersey Travel, Neighbourhood Watch and Volunteer Agency. All of which delivered sessions to promote independence and community involvement.
